By reading this document, you are ahead of 95% of the population. You are a “doer”. You’ve decided that you are not going to put up with this situation and you are sick and tired of your doctor whining about caffeine, exercise, and stress! You also don’t really want to take the pile of pharmaceutical chemicals your doctor is pushing on you.
I get emails every week from people like you. The number of palpitation sufferers in the world is enormous. Did you know that there are over 427,000 searches per month on Amazon for people looking for solutions to heart palpitations? That is over 14,200 people per day who are desperate enough to sit down and do some searching! Clearly, the issue is huge!
People who find their way to this informational site usually do so because they feel that their doctors either don't fully understand the heart palpitations issue or the doctors refuse to disclose the nature of the issue. Some people end up here after reading my 2004 book on Amazon.
In many cases, people are here because they are frustrated with having to take those toxic pharmaceutical drugs. You don’t like the way the drugs make you feel, and more importantly, you remember how well they felt just a short time ago!
In a very small number of cases that I’ve seen, people have abused their bodies so badly that physical damage has happened. These people could have physical heart defects that no amount of good common sense and nutrition will fix. In the majority of “common heart palpitation” cases, the condition is often related to digestion and inflammation! It is not rocket science once you understand the risk factors and triggers for palpitations. Having said that, I should add that there is no single trigger or risk factor. Palpitations could be triggered by one, or several, common risk factors including but not limited to:
- Your body’s acidity level
- Your fat deposits
- Your level of anxiety
- Whether or not you have sleep apnea
- Clogged arteries
- Esophageal Reflux
- Consumption of Canola Oil (Common in pesticides)
- The amount of mercury in your system
- The Level of inflammation in your body
- Your consumption of highly processed foods
- How many Root Canals you’ve had
- Whether or not your floss your teeth enough
- The quality of fish oils you take
- Whether or not you have the right gut flora
- Whether or not you have H. Pylori
- The state of your intestinal tract
- The types of medications you take, and
- Many others…
I don’t really know why, but doctors will nearly always prescribe beta blockers and other toxic pharmaceuticals to mask the symptoms. In the end, people continue to suffer. While I am critical of how doctors handle this issue, at the same time I can't totally blame their response. Many people just won't bother to take the time to find out why they have palpitations – until they feel like the next step might be death! And most people only want is the magic pill. I can tell you, there is never an easy button when it comes to hour health.
If you are one of those people, let me save you a ton of time by saying, “Stop reading right now and go watch a movie.” One day, many years down the road, you might understand what's going on here.
What is Heart Palpitations?
You are suddenly aware of heavy beats in your chest. You might feel several heavy beats then no beats for a few seconds! “OMG, I'm dying”, you think. Or you have just gone to bed at night and within ten minutes, your heart is doing flip-flops. You can't sleep! The anxiety builds with every episode. You feel like you have a buzz going on in your chest. You find it hard to explain to people. It doesn't feel right and you know it! Eventually, you realize that you really can't live with this feeling, so your quest for solutions begins by going to your doctor.
If your “attacks” are bad enough, you might even check into the “ER” for some emergency care. And if you don't have medical coverage, you might be as unlucky as one young lady that I spoke with not too long ago. She thought she was dying. Her ER bill cost her $6,100! This could go on for several months as you try desperately to find a solution. You start “Googling” about how to stop heart palpitations. Eventually, you find my site. You find this article – and you just know that your journey is over.
The site will reveal everything I have learned (up to date) about palpitations – and it will be updated monthly as I continue my research. You will soon learn that my fix was as easy as making some small changes to my lifestyle and environment, and possibly spending a few bucks on some essential supplements.
Why Am I Qualified To Comment On Heart Palpitations?
In 2002, I suffered palpitations that scared me intensely. After the first major attack, I started having attacks every single day. Each one made me think I was dying. I knew that I could not go on living this way. The anxiety alone was enough to drive me over the top. But I'm a full-time computer analyst and researcher – and Irishman (with no reverse gears), so I decided to put my skills and determination to work.
It took almost 7 years of testing and networking with others all over the world, but I was finally able to nail enough of the risk factors to take a bite out of my own palpitations. Today, I am palpitation free and have never felt better in my life! There are a couple of things that one must understand about palpitations before one takes any action, however. If your doctor has thoroughly diagnosed you and he/she has given you a clean bill of health but maintains your palps are related to anxiety or drinking too much coffee or something along those lines, then you may be in the same category that I was and you should keep reading.
In another scenario, if your doctor's diagnosis is that you have some physical defect in your heart. It might be a prolapsed mitral valve, or maybe defective Purkinje fibers in the heart that cause improper electrical conductivity, or you have heart disease. If this is you, then put this document down and go see your cardiologist. You are in dire need of professional medical care!
The other thing I should mention before we get into this is that nothing I say here, nor any of the products or lifestyle changes that I recommend have been evaluated by the FDA. Nothing here is meant to treat or cure a disease or illness.
My Theory Regarding Chronic Inflammatory Palpitations (CIP)
At birth, we are all alkaline. Our mothers transfer alkalinity to us as babies throughout the pregnancy. This is why pregnant women experience morning sickness and why they experience special food cravings. The body is reacting to the loss of alkaline material and the mind makes women crave food substances that are likely to be alkaline. There are numerous tests where pregnant women were given high alkaline water to drink during pregnancy. In most cases, they suffered NO morning sickness. I have personal experience with this fact in my own family. That said, however, from birth forward nearly everything we do tends to deplete our mineral stores (in our bones) that help to keep us alkaline.
The body must maintain a pH of 7.365 in the blood, give or take a very small margin. So when you drink any carbonated beverage (cola, beer, cider etc.), unless you drink 32 eight ounce glasses of high alkaline water, then you will not have neutralized the damage done by that single bottle of cola. That said, the human body is incredibly strong and adaptive. It can take 40 years to wear yourself down through self-abusive dietary habits.
You might have four or five colas per week and feel just fine. However, in the long run, you are going to be writing to me to find out why you have palpitations when suddenly you find your body has given up. You will begin to notice things like arthritis and joint pain. These are the early warning signs. When we have a lifestyle like this, we are losing minerals from our bones on a daily basis.
When you are deficient in just one mineral, then there will be a process in your body that suffers. It will mean that you don't get to make that enzyme or hormone that you really need – and so the first domino falls. The renowned Dr. Jim LaValle wrote a great book called “Cracking the Metabolic Code“. I highly recommend it if you really want a good insight into the human digestive and endocrine system.
Dr. LaValle calls the process – “Dysbiosis”. If you go to YouTube and search his name, you will find a lot of videos that he has done. He teaches other doctors and lectures all over the world.
I also had a fair bit of “stress” in my life from 1999 to 2002. I found a young man hanging from a support in his bathroom. He was just 20 years old and had committed suicide. I cut him down and tried unsuccessfully to revive him. In the six months that followed, my father-in-law died of cancer and my own father died, in my arms, also from cancer. I was in the middle of a career change and had purchased some land to build a house near my new job when suddenly things changed. My new work location was going to be somewhere else, so I had to turn around and sell the property only a week after buying it. I had also listed my principal residence. We had several showings per week. At the same time, I had a rental house a few miles away. The renter suddenly took off without notice and had ruined the inside of the house, leaving me to have to renovate it.
I ripped the carpets out and put in new toilets, gyprock, carpets, and linoleum. Meanwhile, my own house sold and I had to find a new one to live in quickly. I found a new one and had to hit the road running in order to meet the closing dates. All that and my work wouldn't give me the extra time I needed to move, so I worked during the day and worked all night loading mobile containers with our stuff.
My First Heart Palpitations
I worked on my house move for three days. Zero sleep. I got everything moved in and was breathing easy as I drove down the road to return the rental truck to the dealer. I remember approaching an intersection where the lights were just going to red. I saw this little girl on the sidewalk next to the road. She was about 3 or 4 years old and morbidly obese. Her mother was also morbidly obese and she was smoking. I remember thinking, “OMG Society isn't smart enough to survive”. That is when it hit me. Suddenly I felt as though I was going to pass out. My heart was racing and I was dizzy. I slammed the truck into park, fearing that I would pass out and lose consciousness. But by the time the light went to green, I had snapped out of it. I got across the road without issue and then proceeded to return the truck.
On the way home, it hit me again. I pulled over for five minutes. Then I started to drive again, but my anxiety level was through the roof. I went directly to the ER, where fortunately here in Canada I can do that without cost. I was in ER for four hours. My heart rate was 220 beats per minute. Over the next few months, I was in and out of the ER about ten times. I was beginning to be afraid to go out of the house. I thought I might lose my job. I was afraid to do anything strenuous.
I went to see cardiologists and other specialists and had dozens of tests including echo cardiograms, treadmill test, Halter monitor and others. When all was said and done, the doctors told me I was fine. They said there was nothing wrong with my heart. They told me to stop drinking coffee and to get more exercise. All of that did me no good. I only got worse. Eventually, the doctors put me on a drug called – “Propaphenone” – also called Rhythmol. I used it for about three months.
I really didn't like the side effects of these toxic drugs. The situation was scaring the daylights out of me. Anxiety became a real issue for me. I was desperate. I could not live like this. That is when the “Irish” in me kicked in. There was no way I was going to let this issue beat me. I immediately went to work on finding the root cause of my problem. I scoured the globe for three years – talking to doctors and researchers everywhere about the issue. I created a database of people who had suffered from palps. I wrote down everything they would tell me about themselves and this issue.
In four years, I logged nearly 7,500 hours of research. My findings made me angry, cynical, and doubly determined. My big break came in about 2004. I accidentally discovered the disease connection to INFLAMMATION. Internal inflammation, it turns out, is the root cause of many health issues for most of us.
Inflammation is the key to almost every health issue. Just look at the ads on TV. Everything is designed to address inflammation. To that end, I realized that I needed to create an environment where Chronic Inflammatory Palpitations cannot exist. Where something doesn’t exist, there is no need to look for cures.
Briefly, here is a bulleted version of my road to being palpitation free.
- I had to Learn about the pH scale and about acidity and alkalinity
- I cut out all fish oil – Fish oil has too much mercury that affects the heart.
- I conferred with the research of Dr. David Duncan in the North Atlantic who found that even two meals of salmon raised his mercury levels beyond the safe limits.
- I eliminated all sources of mercury in my diet and environment. Mercury is extremely toxic and triggers inflammation. I had all of my amalgam dental fillings taken out.
- I made sure that I Flossed my teeth every day. Bacteria in teeth trigger palpitations specifically. In fact, bacteria not just in teeth, but in your intestines as well secrete a neurotoxin that has a range of effects on the human body – depending on the strain of bacteria. You will soon learn that these bacteria are what contribute to onset Autism. This will be the subject of more research if I have time.
- I eliminated refined sugar from my diet – I cannot over emphasize this one. It causes yeast infections and feeds diseases like cancer and inflammation. Sugar is bad. There is just no getting around this. If you want sweet, take honey.
- I developed a program to replenish lost minerals in my body.
- I researched supplements that would support an alkaline lifestyle.
- I discovered the power of Aloe Gel and Spirulina!
- I got tested for H. Pylori and was found positive. So I went on medications to be rid of H. Pylori. (This made a huge difference)
I created a list of essential supplements to support optimal health, which I highlight throughout the website, and I eliminated the “bad foods” that worsen the problem. No more sugar, no soda, no beer, no wine. Soda is pH 2.5 and requires, as noted earlier, 32 eight ounce glasses of pH 7 water just to neutralize the damage.
I stopped eating greasy fried foods PERIOD. This creates all kinds of collateral acids that are just plain destructive. I especially targeted Canola Oil. CANOLA oil is a huge enemy of good health. Instead, I started using grape seed oil, sesame oil, MCT oil, or sunflower seed oil. Canola oil is described by Mike Adams (the health ranger) as a pesticide and is the main ingredient in many household pesticides.
It is also the oil of choice by nearly all restaurants because it is the cheapest. It is in mayonnaise, hummus, and other foods.
I cut my coffee consumption down considerably, and switch to decaf! If you are concerned about acid, I strongly recommend that you get some pH Drops and put 5 or 6 drops in any coffee you drink. This turns acidic coffee into high alkaline coffee!
What about Supplements?
Once I understood the impact of inflammation, I started researching and trying different supplements that tend to make the body more alkaline! Here is a list of the supplements that I currently favor for healthy body and mind:
Spirulina – The World's Most Powerful Superfood – One night I got some timely correspondence from a friend, whom I met on my blog. He reminded me of how Spirulina saved his wife's life. Spirulina is one of the oldest life forms on Earth. Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that helped produce the oxygen in our atmosphere billions of years ago so that other life forms could appear. Researchers from China recently summarized a number of the potential health benefits of Astaxanthin supplementation. As a potent antioxidant, the myriad of potential health benefits is staggering. However, there's still fairly limited research regarding the optimal dosage, safety, and general effectiveness of this supplement in human studies. Free radicals and other reactive oxygen species are produced during normal life- sustaining aerobic metabolism. In excess, these molecules can cause protein and lipid oxidation and DNA damage. I only discovered this in mid-2012. I researched olive leaf extract for a long time before I tried it. I had some blood pressure issue and was looking for a non-drug solution. I would never have believed that probiotics were so important. I used to laugh at the ads promoting them. But once I started learning about the prevalence of bad bacteria and about the range of effects they can on good probiotic I immediately took them more seriously. No one is quite sure how bacopa influences neurological chemistry, and research is still in the early stages, but studies show a clear link between bacopa and the brain. One recent double-blind trial of 68 healthy participants found that those taking 150 mg of bacopa twice daily for 90 days experienced a significant improvement in their working memory compared to those taking a placebo. In the past week, I have personally spoken with several university students who claim to have used Bacopa to give them the mental edge they needed for exams. While this is only anecdotal evidence, I will be looking for some clinical trials to back this up.
Other studies discovered that Bacopa reduced anxiety while helping the mind learn quickly and retain information. And because of bacopa's protective effect on neurons, some researchers believe it may help prevent and treat dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Once again, this is something that bears watching as more research is conducted.
For heart palpitations, however, a less well-known benefit is bacopa's effect upon gastrointestinal issues – especially for people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). A clinical trial of 169 patients with IBS compared the effects of an Ayurvedic preparation containing Bacopa to standard drug therapy. At the end of the trial, those participants with IBS characterized by constipation did better on the drugs. But the subjects suffering from IBS with diarrhea got more relief from the ayurvedic therapy, probably because of Bacopa's ability to ease spasms in the gastrointestinal tract. My own research already shows me that a spasming GI tract is a big issue for us here on the palpitations site. Quite often, these spasms are so aggressive that they are mistaken for heart palpitations. When this happens, we often go into a full-blown anxiety attack. Of course, this only worsens the problem.
